When people are unhappy with a service or company there are many different ways that they can deal with their issue. Some choose to stand outside of that Oakville real estate where the store or company headquarters is with signs and stage a protest. Others are more comfortable writing letters and asking for change. We all know that what most companies want and need is money and continued business. This is why others choose to stage a boycott when they are pushing for change.
The term boycott refers to actively abstaining from using a service, purchasing a certain good, or even dealing with a certain person or nation. One of the most famous set of boycotts was during the Olympic Games between 1976 and 1988. This was mainly due to political conflicts between the hosting country and other nations. But there are all sorts of reasons why people and groups choose to give up working with a certain company or other organization. You might have a disagreement with a heating Hamilton firm or be part of a group that opposes practices against animals.
One of the reasons that some boycotts have been affective in the past is that they have succeeded in hurting the subject's reputation or profits. If a manufacturing firm that is creating a boiler water treatment chemical, for example, and it is proven that they are causing more than their fair share of pollution than a movement might start to boycott their products. If this starts to significantly hurt their business and they see a financial reason to change their practices than that is usually the biggest motivator that will result in positive change.
While one person can choose to boycott a mortgage broker, Edmonton grocery store, or international company on their own, one person's voice usually is not enough to make significant changes unless they are able to bring other people to their side. The power of a boycott is to show that one party is really dependent on the other to succeed. Unless you're fighting against a very small business you will usually find that one person's complaints are dealt with in other ways than making permanent policy changes. Some people choose to file a class action lawsuit Canada or make their boycott public to get the attention of more people who might be on their side and out for the same results.
Some of the most famous boycotts include the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which was started by the acts of Rosa Parks, the Delano Grape Strike and Boycott in 1960 and the Asian Student School Boycott in South Philadelphia in 2009. Here, 26 students stopped attending classes to protest the handling of Black-on-Asian violence within their school. |
