There are two types of people in this world. The kind that sit back in their Park Lake condos and watch injustice happen and the kind that stand up and do something about it. Burma is one of the many hot button issues on the world scene today. Many people, Burmese and foreign alike, are tired of waiting around for the military regime controlling the nation to give up the ghost and have decided to do something about it. Protests and demonstrations are the first line of attack in such a situation. Read on to find out more about these protests, what they hope to accomplish, and how you can help.

In Burma in September of 2007, the people, led by a handful of Buddhist monks, demonstrated in the street against the military dictatorship that controls their lives. One of their primary rallying points was that Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel peace prize winner and human rights activist, is still under house arrest. Unlike here, where a class action lawsuit in Canada is the worst a protestor can expect, in Burma as many as 200 people were killed and many more imprisoned as a result of the demonstration.

As a response to this injustice, many human rights groups all over the world stepped up to protest on behalf of the Burmese who were so cruelly put down by their own leaders. One of the most high profile events was a wine and cheese fundraiser hosted major Hollywood names like Anjelica Huston and Walter Koening. There was also a protest marches in Chicago, demonstrations outside several European embassies, and university rallies outside of Saskatoon auto body shops. One photojournalist even climbed the Eiffel Tower in Paris!

You might be asking yourself: what can these people hope to accomplish? How can walking down a street on the other side of the world oust a military regime in Asia? The answer is that protests and demonstrations are a way of spreading knowledge of the injustices and of garnering more support from people who run Toronto executive search companies and - hopefully - control the purse strings and policies of nations. If the protesters can catch the eye of the people who make these decisions, Burma's leadership can be boycotted, chastised, and even bullied into backing down.

If you would like to help a cause like Burma's by participating in a rally, protest, or demonstration, the best thing that you can do is make sure you know as much about the issues at hand as you did about Calgary mortgages when you were shopping for one. That way if anyone, such as a potential new supporter or a member of the media, asks you a question you can express yourself intelligently and reflect well on the cause.
