Around the holidays, one of the charities that we start hearing more about in food and beverage marketing and at events is the local food bank. Most of us know that this is a place that supplies basic food items to those that cannot afford to buy them for themselves. But, you might not be aware of how many people around your Plano homes or neighborhood in Oklahoma actually depend on these services on a daily basis. Or that there are thousands of people in need throughout the year and not just when Christmas and Thanksgiving roll around.

There are now thousands of food banks operating on six continents throughout the world so there is not just one model of how they work or where they get the bulk of their food supplies. Most of them operate as a place for people and companies to donate food and then they distribute their supplies to pantries, soup kitchens and other places where those in need can get a meal. This means that if you're donating food that you don't want in your Toronto condo to the local food bank then there is a good chance that it will find the best place where the most people can benefit from your donation.

The first food bank was in Arizona and started in 1967. It was called the St Mary's Food Bank Alliance and was the brainchild of a volunteer named John van Hengel. He discovered that grocery stores were throwing out food where the packaging was damaged or that was too close to its expiry date to sell. He started collecting this food for the local dining room and soon found that there was too much for just one organization. You will find today that still most of the food that is donated to a food bank comes from generous catering services, Toronto grocery stores or restaurants with things that they cannot use or sell.

There are now thousands of food banks across America and the rest of the world and this is always a worthwhile place to donate food or funds. While you will find that there are many people campaigning for donations around your Halton Hills real estate or homes in New York throughout the colder months, the truth is that this is a need that never goes away. If you're not someone who keep a lot of spare food around the house that you don't really need then you could donate money or go and do some grocery shopping especially for the food bank. If you're looking for what's best to donate from your home then you should stick to non-perishable items. Many food banks also take household items that families might need, like toiletries and cleaning supplies.
