Back in 2008, the Burma: It Can't Wait campaign was launched in partnership between Fanista, the US Campaign for Burma and the Human Rights Action Center in order to help free Aung San Suu, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and to raise awareness about residents of Burma who were having their human rights violated by the country's military regime. Many people who live in a Toronto luxury condo tend to take for granted the free lives they live and aren't aware of what's happening in other nations.

The Burma: It Can't Wait campaign was initially launched to gain support and establish democracy in Burma through the help of celebrity videos. The ideal living situation for most people, whether they live in New York, Florence or Bradford houses, is to live in a democratic state. That's not always the case for everybody though, as evidence by the Burma: It Can't Wait campaign.

Burma is not a democratic nation but is a military ruled regime run by a military junta that suppresses most Burma residents, especially those who do not follow their orders, and they use absolute power and force to rule. Basically, an iron fist that nobody can stop is ruling Burma. Think an Ajax dental clinic would want to freely re-locate to Burma? Probably not.

International sanctions and condemnation have not made any dents in the way Burma rulers run their country. There's a reason why the Burma: It Can't Wait campaign was launched and that was to help raise awareness about all the gross human rights abuses that the Burmese generals and army have been accused of. Things such as top-notch education, health care or plastic surgeons that provide nose jobs in Toronto do not exist in Burma.

Democracy is a word many take for granted but one that the people of Burma hope one day to be able to use when talking about their government and how their country is run. The dictionary defines the word democracy as: "government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system."

Anyone who lives in a democratic country such as Canada or the United States knows how freeing it is to live in a democracy and not have to worry about their civil liberties on a daily basis and can go to work at their Revit training job without fear of the government. The Burma: It Can't Wait campaign is trying to make that happen for the people of Burma so that they can live in a free and equal country with rights and privileges.
